    Technical drawings and history

Just trying to resurrect an earlier 'closed' post of mine about, eg. the Class 50s, 33s, 37s and their ilk, and in particular the comment about "Are there any good books about the design and making of these now disused locos? I've seen train spotter books listing the numbers, or you sometimes...

Overseas Holidays - Sleeper trains / compartments

Certainly deserves closer inspection. Website is a bit flakey and gives the appearance of a recent startup operation, and reading between the lines it looks like you have to spend probably a good two or three hours each way reaching the sight seeing destinations by coach after leaving the train...

Pleasant mini weekend break by train?

Thanks. Looks like you got the point, and kindly used your time to submit a sensible answer!

What pre, say 1980, diesel locos are still in use?

On a similar note, are there any good books about the design and making of these now disused locos? I've seen trainspotter books listing the numbers, or you sometimes see rambling historical things about what loco operated what service on what date, but I suppose I'm thinking of a cross between...

Pleasant mini weekend break by train?

Well, wasn't an HST (on which to be fair are where I have had my tatty and bumpy first class experiences, or behind a Class 87 (?) Liverpool Street to Norwich a few years ago) so guess must be a 222 though am not that familiar with the modern classifications.

Pleasant mini weekend break by train?

Hmmm, well I suppose I was looking for something special, different and cosy. I tried the first class on a line from Kettering to London and back the other day on one of those prebook discount bargain tickets. In principle it would have been nice, apart from horrible flat (perfectly...

Overseas Holidays - Sleeper trains / compartments

Thinking that the offerings of the likes of www.greatrail.com and others were offered as 'something special' and a 'great' railway 'journey' I assumed you had your own sleeper compartment on the the train for the week or however long it was. In practice I see you just shuttle between towns...

Pleasant mini weekend break by train?

Where in the UK might make for a good and relaxing say two or three day just for pleasure rail trip, rather like for instance Michael Portillo and his Bradshaw's guide book trips, or Michael Palin on his various around the world trips over the years? The obvious would be anything 'as seen...

What pre, say 1980, diesel locos are still in use?

I'll have to have a Google then, to see where these things are routinely running. All I know so far is that viewing this page a moment ago caused the first Windows blue screen of death and uncontrolled reboot I've experienced since I experimented with Windows 98 ten or more years ago!

What pre, say 1980, diesel locos are still in use?

School teacher used to get his class hooked on train spotting. (Mr Howells, East Sussex anyone?) and I recall what seemed, and still seem to me, marvels of engineering, design, beauty, romance, effectiveness, delightful noise in the form of, say, Class 37s, 50s, 47 and so on. At the time I...
