Class 350/2s to replace 323s on Northern

323s are only quick up to about 60mph so are great on the Liverpool to Wigan stoppers due to the brilliant braking capabilities especially with the Double Variable Rate Sanders during leaf fall. They take a lot longer to go from 60-90mph and can never keep to time on Blackpool-Airport runs...

GWML ATP - Technical Details of the system

To remove ATP* from the Chiltern network, TPWS train stop is fitted to every signal¹ and also include inner and outer over speed grids. *Was removed due to the cost and challenges faced sourcing parts for both track and train. ¹Not on the LUL section. Only trip cock.

Cancellations on Blackpool South line on Sundays

Question is who will train those "flexible staff". Staff are trained on basics by a trainer (0900-1700 Mon-Fri) at HQ of the TOC, but shadow an actual conductor to learn the role every other day of week including antisocial times . The trainer ALWAYS says "I'll teach you the role but you'll...

Why do new/ modern rail trains seem to have cab doors that don’t slide.

Sliding cab doors seem to be more prone to excessive wind noise when driving at speed. 323s are atrocious and are the worse sliding cab door trains I have ever driven.

Avanti shop closures when approaching Preston

Another reason why the shop closes is because crews are formed of people from multiple depots. I used to work a service to Glasgow which consisted of a Glasgow service manager and CSA (EUS-GLC), a Euston CSA (EUS-PRE), a Carlisle CSA (EUS-CAR) and a Preston CSA (EUS-PRE). Then a Glasgow CSA...

The locos are traditionally spun around at Hatton if required via the junctions for Stratford-upon-Avon.

Chiltern MK5s Starting 2026 (non speculative updates thread)

Only the Mk3 carriages and DVTs go for tyre turning at Aylesbury. DRS deals directly with the 68s.

Can any current/former Chiltern Railways drivers talk about whether they enjoy working for the company?

I used to work for Chiltern Railways based at Marylebone. I left at the beginning of the year. It was a great TOC to work for. There were great people working at all depots. Marylebone colleagues were brilliant from the Train Crew Supervisors (TCS) through to the Driver Managers (who were all...

Avanti WC down the pan again

The issue is that back in the VT days, staff would be willing to work RDs therefore accumulating quite a bit of annual leave. VT would allow a certain number of annual leave days to carry over the following year had to be used by end of Feb/Mar. This also prevented a mass of staff requesting...

Brilliant. Thank you. Am I right in thinking there are two links at the depot?

    Northern Blackpool Depot

Hi everyone. I've recently applied for Northern Blackpool depot as a qualified driver. I just wanted to ask the following regarding Northern Blackpool TPE depot. What are Ex-TPE terms and conditions. (There only appears to be one type of T&C on the Aslef website where I'm sure there used to...

Chiltern during LU strike - why leave Network Rail stations unserved?

There is a change of signaller just north of Great Missenden (Marylebone North) and just north of Amersham (LUL Amersham) - without Amersham being in operation it's not possible to use the Crossover just south of Great Missenden as there is no way of Marylebone North knowing that the section of...

Alliance Blackpool service to be run by Grand Central and start in 2021

It's a clever strategy. It's not about A-B journeys. You don't get a train leaving full from its origin arriving with the same exact passengers at its destination. The strategy is targeting a variety of passengers to ensure a successful business (commuter traffic, business and leisure)...
