I had been buying a return ticket on a daily basis - testing whether to move from commuting in a car to the train so I didn't want to by a long term ticket.
My wife suggested I buy a Carnet as it would save me queuing and save me a bit of money.

Thanks for the response. I just feel like I was a sitting duck as I didn't know that I had to fill the ticket in - and I'd spent £107.00 on them that morning! The notion of paying again was not a palatable one and the Penalty fare was certainly not presented as a replacement ticket in the event...

Using the automated ticket barriers I travelled to London Kings Cross without any validity problems...
