The fast 7:29 service from MK to London is usually 350/4s, sometimes with a 350/2 paired to the 350/4s.
Today however this service was using the newer 730 trains which previously I have only seen on the slow service until now. With more 730s on the line the final 350/2 retirement seems...
I think they mean it was supposed to be 12 cars (3 sets) but instead was 8 cars (2 sets). I was sat on the 350/4 but saw the 350/2 it was paired to when it pulled up.
On route to London this morning LNR announced the formation was shorter than usual (2 cars instead of 3), due to vandalism (windows smashed). Could be related to that.
Over the past couple of months, I've still been getting 350/2 sets in the morning on the direct (fast line) route from Milton Keynes to Euston. Really dislike the 3+2 seating, hope to see the last 6 sets out of lease/service over the next few months. Did notice lots of them stored at Wembley though!
Less specific to Virgin /Avanti but neither of the two main train operators providing commuter services between Milton Keynes and Euston (avanti and LNR) have invested in a modern ticket system, despite broken promises, they both still issue annual seasons tickets on paper and the station staff...
