Trivia - named stations that were located outside their towns etc.

The original Stathpeffer Station on the Dingwall and Skye Line was some distance from the town. Apparently the local landowner refused to let the railway run through the town. It was the only substantial town on the route. Later a branch to Strathpeffer was opened and the original station was...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

And some of the ECML from Berwick to Waverley is actually north of Edinburgh if we are being picky!

    Surplus rolling stock after Beeching

My Grandfather worked as a signalman on the Wellington to Stafford line via Newport in the latter stages of the line's history. I think he, typically, had one train a day coming through.

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

In my experience they are rarely in operation at Kings Cross when the platform is busy.

Unnecessary features on rolling stock that are bad or inconvenient for passengers

No it's useless. Whenever I have been on a train with 3+2 seating, there are rarely more than 2 people in the 3s even when people are standing. If the train is that crowded, fewer seats with more room for standing is a better option. If it's not that crowded 2+2 seating is better. Obviously...

TRIVIA - current stations which were originally two separate stations

Certainly in the case of London Road Station. I am not sure that the division was between the through platforms (13/14) and the terminus platforms. The division of the station appeared to predate the construction of those platforms.

TRIVIA - current stations which were originally two separate stations

I don't think so. There was a separate station, Manchester Mayfield, just across the Fairfax Street from Platforms 13-14 whose passenger services were moved to Manchester London Road (renamed as Manchester Piccadilly) in 1960.

Storm Frank: impact on West Coast and Highland Mainlines

Widening the river will lower the speed of the water flow past the bridge supports and reduce the risk of scouring in the future?

Train toilets being used as private compartments..

In the 1970s, cheap fares were marketed as 'Big City Savers'. This seems to be a development of this as 'Big Sh*tty Savers'.

Deansgate; Manchester too busy? Close the station!

Plenty of trains, notably TPE trains from Scotland, do not stop at Deansgate. The problem is that Oxford Road is very convenient for a number of hotels and the Universities while Deansgate (or Knott Mill as I prefer to call it) is great for accessing Metrolink for those travelling to Salford...

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

If it's such a good idea, how come other stations do not use that system? Or do they?

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

The only thing wrong with Waverley as far as I am concerned is the Byzantine numbering of platforms. If there is any logic to the numbering system then it has escaped me.

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

It's usually quicker to use the lift.

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

It was promised by the SNP as a sop to avoid flack when the EARL project was killed in 2007. It's only taken eight years!

Trivia: Most Universities served by a train service

Why include Heriot-Watt which is six miles away from Waverley Station (or anywhere else on the East Coast line) and exclude Queen Margarets University which is very close to Musselburgh Station on the East Coast Main Line. You could also add the Open University in Scotland which is situated...
