I feel this is a very balanced and realistic view of the job particularly from the "outside boxes" perspective. For signalling centres/ROCs also factor in office politics and potentially having to work closely with people you may or may not like!!!

I'd complete them by tonight rather than risk it. Might just be my region but there is always plenty of Sundays and rest days available so don't worry about that.

Fixed Red signals at the end of bi-directional working may come under the kind of thing you're after. Essentially it's just a signal to call the route up to and then presumably switch ends. Must be quite a few of these around the network.

Quite a variety of jobs come up on the railway, some with better pay than others obviously. I'd guard against doing the job of signaller just for the money. I think you do have to be suited to the type of work it is and the affect shift work has.

If you're booked off not required to work it's basic rate surely?

Personally I wouldn't say it's a disadvantage to start in a lower grade mechanical box as generally lower grade means less trains and less going on day to day. Of course there are very busy grade 2 boxes but then the term "busy" means different things to different people but I digress...

When I applied I put N/A for most of the questions as they related to specific railway events (Spads etc) so don't let that phase you. They are looking for the person who can display the correct attitude and experience in their application.
