Anybody interested in modern music that isn't of the boy-band/X-Factor variety would be well advised to have a listen to BBC 6 Music. They've been playing Chvrches for a while and only a few minutes ago played Public Service Broadcasting's 'London Can Take It.'

My Dad did forty-seven years on the LMS and BR and would always say numbers like "Fifty-Five, Eighty-One." The initial 4 added to ex-LMS locos after nationalisation was always omitted.

My Dad did forty-seven years on the LMS and BR so it was sort of bred into me. My interest has waxed and waned over the years but never completely gone away. I've never been a Train Spotter though.

According to Adrian Vaughan — I can't recall if it's covered in 'Signalman's Twilight' or 'Signalman's Nightmare' — it was a far from rare occurrence on the Western.

I'm not aware of any dedicated books on the subject but 'Wounded' by Emily Mayhew, ISBN 978-0-19-932245-9, has a good chapter on ambulance trains.
