In a class 220/221 the DRA simply stops you from taking traction, it'll let you put it into forward and it'll rev the engines up, the brakes will release if you put the throttle into traction it just won't move. Unless you roll cause the brakes have released obviously..
One of the centre car engines was isolated prior to the incident, then the second centre car engine failed in service rending no 400v supply to the compressors meaning there was no air supply. Second unit was sent to couple up to share main res air and boost it back to the depot.
They are both maintained exactly the same, it's just down to the TOC how much they want to spend on the interiors. The Virgin 221's are worked much harder with an average daily diagram of 1100 miles compared to around 800 for Cross Country.
Yes. They only have 20 Voyager sets all of which are 221's. XC have all 34 x 220's. XC have a total Voyager fleet of 56, rising to 57 by December 2017 once 144 is back in service.
On Meridians & Voyagers there's a tone that is played by the TMS system at regular intervals if something is wrong, such as door issues, toilet issues, or anything the system deems important enough that it requires attention.
I know with XC or VWC that if a 4 car Voyager or 5 car 221 has 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 4 toilets locked out of use it won't be allowed off depot. If toilets fail during the day riders will be sent to try and rectify faults and get them working again. Failing that the trains generally get swapped...
Yrs this is happening. This protect will be complete by December 2017. It is highly inefficient. But as the original coaches from 144 are still in service they must be reformed rather than 2 donor coaches put in their space.
This set will be losing its 2 shops at some point as when 144 is reformed it'll have its original coaches put back in (after being rewired). As the original coaches out of 144 are still in service they have to go back to their original formations. Cross Country are going to donate 2 coaches out...
