    A career as a signaller

I’m on IST at the moment. I interviewed in Jan, job was offered early Feb but Covid also played a part in the delay on course start dates. The course is hard, I’d go as far to say it’s the hardest course I’ve ever done and I previously held senior management roles in Financial Services, so I’ve...

Yeah that’s what I thought as the company are continuing with future opportunities in other regions so it’s clearly a strategy. I understand the rationale - ie having a pool of people to choose from that have been through Signaller school already Vs recruiting externally and having to wait for...

A question for the experienced Signallers on here. How was ‘future opportunities’ communicated internally? A guy on the course I’m on who is future ops has been told by his LOM that he doesn’t know what to do with him when he finishes the course, as there’s no jobs and none likely to come up...

I think, from memory, that you should move to the next stage after 3 working days if you’ve passed them. I didn’t get told I’d passed, I just got info on the next stage which for me was to select locations I could commute to within an hour (future opportunity application). I did email HR and...

I applied in Jan, interviewed and offered job in feb, start date was initially 27/4 with school the week after in York. This got delayed due to Covid and I’m due to start school in September but now in Coventry.

Thanks for this Cleanshirt, really insightful and a great help to us that are waiting to start signaler school. Great points re use of flash cards - I’ll definitely get some before I start in September. Did your group study together on an evening? Just curious as to how it works and why some of...

That’s totally unfair, surely when this happens the appointing LOM should have his cost centre reimbursed by the ROC cost centre as they’ve never had the benefit of the trainee. Or better still all trainees costs should be centrally controlled by recruitment.

Blummin heck, that sounds like a luxury car showroom! I often wondered what the car if choice was for a Signaller - I imagined a Volvo estate :D

I agree Tom, I think if you’re in a safety critical role, you should certainly be able to assess whether or not you’re fit to work any extra hours (and if this will affect your performance or not). When the working time directive was brought into my old role, it negatively affected morale in...
