Thanks, it was advertised as a Bristol terminator, it was only the onboard systems which weren't updated. GWR staff were very helpful at Exeter where I boarded.

Further to this, is it valid to use a non reservable service if your advance ticket specifies a reservable service? This would be the same route, just if a non reservable service arrived first when you were changing trains and it was quicker to do so.

This appears to be because Trainsplit is showing an itinerary using Crosscountry trains only, so is showing an XC only fare which is cheaper. Most booking sites will show the first connecting train after allowing the minimum connecting time. In this case from Birmingham it is the 1153 VTWC...
