Getting passengers to spread out along the platform

There are two stations on the Highland line, at Pitlochry and Dunkeld, where ScotRail trains stop well short of the station buildings. i have seen at least one person actually miss his train because the guard wouldn't wait for him to run up.

ScotRail - New app / website booking engine from 30 July 2026

I noticed this morning (10th August) that the app was not showing the morning LNER service from Pitlochry. Is it possible that this was because all LNER seats were booked? I bought my ticket at the station as usual, and found plenty of unreserved seating in coach C.

Bus services that enter private property (except shopping centres/supermarkets/works only)

A slightly different situation; in Pitlochry, Perthshire, the Aldour stop bus shelter is located in the garden of someone's house. I dont know if the owner gets any kind of rent for allowing this. Coaches also use the driveway at Blair Atholl castle to pick up.

Operation in Scotland has been mentioned, and at least one unit appeared around the time that the Bathgate line was re-opened. This photo is not mine so apoplgies to the taker.

"Trivia" Through stations with extremely few passenger trains which do not call

In the 1960s, I would say that Inverkeithing would qualify- less so today, as the Aberdeen trains no longer stop. But there was one oddity; an Edinburgh to Dunfermline service (posslibly Saturday only) that didn't stop here.

    Signalling at Dunkeld and Birnam.

Thanks for the response, although I don't think this would apply here as the home signals are still mechanical semaphores. 1773821467 Sorry for not making that point more clearly. I hope to get down to Dunkeld one day and see what happens from the platform. 1773821750 Thanks for posting that...

    Signalling at Dunkeld and Birnam.

I have passed through Dunkeld and Birnam station on the Highland main line recently, and wanted to ask a couple of questions about the way this station is signalled. there is a Home signal on the Up line (Southbound), but no subsidiary signal for the loop. i would assume this means that the...

    TRIVIA: through-platforms with mid-platform signals

The signals at Pitlochry are set at about one third/ two thirds intervals on both up and down platforms. I believe this was done to allow faster running into and out of the platforms. The Azuma and Sleeper trains have to stop well past these signals in either direction.
