Are the recent derailments indicative of poor performance from Network Rail?

All about having the data and identifying the trends. Of course that can often be interpreted in many ways, as usually happens.

Best College/Uni Course to become Railway Fitter

Fitters do come from the Motor industry, Aviation, Military. All sorts really. Apprenticeships are the best way, but a very competitive entry. Check out GTR's page on engineering apprentices (not currently open, but it's an annual intake, historic adverts are still online). If you're looking...

    GBR Anglia

Very different to the 387. Interesting to see how different operators are taking it.

Report of collision Bedford (Elstow) - 19/06/26

Tough one for the railway. Thoughts with all those involved and hopeful for positive outcomes for all the injured. We've got one of the best safety records in the world for a reason.

    [LT] Lithuania 2026 update

Just back from my trip and found LTG-Link to be a reliable and good operator. Travelling on FIP coupons so had the reservation requirement for the express Kaunas-Vilnius and Mockava-Kaunas sections, but on the occasion I didn't have one in advance the onboard staff were very happy to deal with...

    [LT] Lithuania 2026 update

Thanks for the information. Visiting Lithuania for the first time in a few weeks, so looking forward to seeing some of the stuff you've mentioned. Those speedy Kaunas - Vilnius trains should be of use as I wish to visit both cities in not a lot of time!

New Jersey Transit to charge USD100.00 for a six mile journey during the football world cup.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those bus routes get diverted or told ‘not for football traffic’. It’s a money making exercise for these authorities who get away with blaming FIFA. Boston are doing the same for the games in Providence. I’ve caught this train via a change at Seacaucus junction...

Great Northern Fleet - 379s introduction

For all intents and purposes, the traction packages and motors are essentially identical on the 379 and 387. Software levels are ever so slightly different, but hardware the same. Pretty difficult to tell the difference between a 379 under power and a 387 on AC doing the same thing (other than...

Trivia: List of international railway border crossing oddities.

The former line between Harmica, Croatia (on the Zagreb - Ljubliana mainline) to Celjie, Slovenia follows the incredibly winding border between the two countries, the Sotla river. The current form of railway is curtailed to Harmica for commuter Zagreb services, but from the north runs to Imeno...

Nicest European Train Stations you have visited

Some smaller scale favourites of mine, pretty much due to the settings in where they are situated- Iselle di Trasquera on the Italian Swiss border, Arth-Goldau in Switzerland and Stralsund in Germany.

The best and worst countries for railway ticketing.

+1 for Belgium, robust and pretty simple system. Spain with it's restrictive in country only booking policy for reservations (painful on interrail) ranks low for me. Switzerland is great, integration with zonal tickets for cities which make more sense than how the Germans do it. I'm not a...

The Railways Bill - discussion about the legislation that will create Great British Railways

Will it provide some sort of timeline to the next year or so regarding GBR? Personally that's one of the more important things I'm waiting on. Patiently waiting for some bedtime reading.

AWC Derailment at Shap Summit 03/11/25

Another busy one for the forum. Thankful to hear no injuries reported at this stage.

Eastbourne and Worthing swapped around on the 00:02 from London Victoria service.

As the above poster says, it would be down to unit requirements, mileages, future planning. Many reasons as to why the leading 4 car had to go the Lovers as opposed the (normally booked) trailing 4 car. If it ran as booked, the Eastbourne portion may not have been able to get back to Lovers...
