i don't think you quite understand the phrase "grandfather rights". by the same logic, would you be happy for a train builder to churn out new stock with the same safety standards as a pacer, after all they're still allowed to run using grandfather rights?

out of interest, are ex forces personnel looked upon favourably when applying for these types of jobs and are there any particular branches/trades that are favoured?

i can't believe the displaced 91s/mk4s are not being considered to take over the cambridge fasts, convert all but one carriage to second class, they could run at 125mph as opposed to the 100mph of the 365s south of hitchin, cutting down on journey times and helping capacity.

apart from the door issue, why do people just assume that the HST's only have 5-10-15 years left in them? have any mk3 coaches been withdrawn because of corrosion or other wear problems? i'd imagine if they were getting old and clapped out in the not too distant future then these problems...

talk of the HST's being over the hill at 35/40 or even 50 years old is silly, people are just using their pre-concieved ideas of how long stock should last, saying "the pacers are only 30 years and they're going to be scrapped so why not the Mk 3's" is like saying that a caravan only lasts...
