    HS2 Old Oak Common

Indeed. And a more manageable 20m or so from the surface.

    HS2 Old Oak Common

A big clue as to HS2's overspends is revealed in a report on Old Oak Common in today's Independent: (my bold) Wow! Would that make them the deepest platforms in the world? That'll be some escalator! Just think of the gradients. I wonder if Natalie Wilson paused to consider what she...

Avanti cancellations - is it always this bad?

And Avanti are already announcing a list of cancellations on their JourneyCheck page for tomorrow (Saturday)

GWR Diversions over East West Rail - Nov 2026

Rather depends on where you're starting from though?

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

It's easy enough for passengers to divert themselves via Brighton. Though National Rail does state no trains Haywards Heath to Lewes till at least 22:00: a message I would expect to see revised before then.

    RIP old National Rail app

Thanks for the update. Shame - it was a useful page which told me all I needed to know at a glance.

    RIP old National Rail app

Not the only change today: I've long used live departure boards.co.uk for station train times, but this has stopped working today (might be due in part to being http). I liked the interface, as it gave arrival and departure times, or reason for cancellation if known, in an easy to read format...

    Adding Railcard to Oyster

I can add Pimlico to the list, having journeyed there from Euston and found my PAYG balance too low to get me through the barriers, before it dawned on me that my new Railcard wasn't registered. I think the gateline attendant there was glad to have something to do to break the monotony.

Clapham Junction to Lancing, back from Amberley

I'm no expert on fares, but a query on Victoria <> Littlehampton using Southern's website gives options both direct (via Haywards Heath) and along the Arun Valley with a change at Barnham, so that seems good enough for me. In fact, there are Advances showing on the outward journey on both...

Your favourite bus/coach livery, past or present.

Seems to me that the industry's favourite livery must be Brighton & Hove's BH3 livery - cream with red swooping from the rear top down past the rear wheel, then up and over the front wheels - judging by the number who copied it (I think I've counted 4 over the years). Plain example on Volvo 421...

London to Eastbourne if route via Lewes disrupted

There is ticket acceptance on Brighton & Hove Buses due to this evening's disruption. It is very unusual for this not to be applied. The bus you should ideally be using is the 12X, as it's limited stop, from outside Brighton or Eastbourne stations.

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

I visited my local Southern station earlier to enquire about a refund given both they & GWR are advising against travel, though GWR (but not apparently Southern) are allowing tickets to be used on Friday. I was told that most train operators (including Southern) were allowing delayed travel and...

Heatwave: Travel on Thursday: Leeds to Gatwick

Would they be able to stay on the train at Stevenage and change at Kings Cross / St Pancras? While there are Bedford-related cancellations this week, being in London gives more options for onward travel in case of a delay. In the circumstances, you'd hope that flexibility would be forthcoming.

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

The advice is constantly changing. Earlier, Southern also said to travel on Friday if you didn't want to go out Wednesday / Thursday, but that's now disappeared. They are however now offering a full refund (though this was beyond the capabilities of the ticket office). I'll see if that can be...

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

Thanks for the info. I see that GWR has joined the "only travel if absolutely necessary" list, as well as allowing travel on Friday instead (trains are going to be busy that day!). If Southern can be contacted, I'll see if they're amenable to a refund.
