Diss Station in Norfolk is served exclusively by intercity trains between Norwich and London. Are there any other examples of stations, which due to their location on main lines or otherwise, are only served by longer-distance intercity trains?

You are along the right lines. I'm sure the stations I have in mind do have a reduced service due to me regularly using them but I'm not sure by how much the service is reduced by.

Frenchurch street and the C2C line is separated from the rest of the network from what I know. You'll have to use London Overground or Underground services to change at Upminster for example. I guess overground from Barking does count I guess. The london overground really means you can travel...

I would have thought it is easier to then name seats as numbers if coaches were letters. A 3 digit system could be used like a hotel where the first digit is the floor number but a letter system has stuck.
