I don't think it will hurt to contact them, but don't be surprised if you don't hear back. Just don't constantly badger them. If you don't hear back, just be thankful that you are still in the running and use the time to scour this forum for advice on the assessment day, and interviews.

I think after applying in Jan '14 they got back to me in March to tell me that they have had a large response, then in May to tell me I'd been successful and put into a pool to await an assessment day, then in July to tell me that they...
After applying in Jan 2014 for the position of Trainee Train driver at Brighton depot, I've just recieved my contract and starting training on 22 June!

I think it's an excellent example. I used an example of my rock climbing, and how to tie in safely. As said, use the STAR process, and really emphasise the process of all you do to ensure it is done in a safe manner.
