The Detroit Bridge, which was a swing bridge carrying a rail line across the Manchester Ship Canal on the Salford/Manchester border but was moved into Salford Quays when the line closed. It now straddles what was once dock no. 9 at the former Salford Docks.
Further to posts 57, 59, 60, 61 and 80 about the Ardwick/Blind Lane Curve, is anyone able to direct me to Network Rail/Northern Hub/Metrolink reports where reinstatement of the route was considered? Might it have been useful for a metrolink shuttle service (as opposed to heavy rail) direct from...
I've enjoyed reading the posts (on a number of different forums on this website) about the Blue Pullman, so my thanks to all contributors.
I understand that Blue Pullman sets ran from 1960 to 1966 on the former Midland Railway route from Manchester to London (with fill-ins during the day), and...
The Wikipedia entry for the Great Rocks Line (I don't know the date of the entry) states that it is only open "for stone freight trains and as an emergency diversionary route for the passenger Buxton line".
Has the Great Rocks line been used as an emergency diversionary route for passenger...
The correct name for Middlewood LC (post no. 3) is, apparently, Norbury Hollow LC. The protecting signals are controlled by the person in the small, adjacent signal box, who also manually opens and closes the gates. 61 trains each day, I understand.
Norbury Hollow Crossing (between Hazel Grove and Middlewood stations on the Manchester to Buxton line) where the signaller leaves his box to manually close/open the gates.
Buxton's two side-by-side stations (now just one station) had the following services:
(i) To Manchester via Stockport
(ii) To Manchester via Chinley
(iii) To Ashbourne
(iii) To Rowsley and the south
(iv) To Millers Dale
Only the first remains.
According to the present entry on Wikipedia (which doesn't state the source of its information) there were over 1.7 million passenger entrances and exits in the period 2021/2022. According to the Realtime Trains website there appear to be five platforms in use throughout the day. Given the happy...
A Big Shout Out For Manchester Oxford Road,
in terms of both looks and historic interest.
Historic Interest: The use of laminated wooden structures to reduce load over an early Victorian viaduct ( as opposed to using masonry, concrete, iron or steel).
Architectural Interest:
(i) English...
This is not an entirely accurate reply to the OP's question, but may provoke some debate. Buxton once had two stations side by side: one built and operated by the LNWR, and the other built and operated by the Midland Railway. The LNWR route went from Buxton to Manchester London Road (now...
Posts 74, 85 and 120 are thought-provoking. They are examples of good practice, which should be adhered to regardless of whether industrial action or possessions are taking place. The DfT, the TOCs and the relevant trade unions should agree a policy which, absent exceptional circumstances. does...
How does the Avanti pay structure operate? If Avanti reduce the frequency of their services (e.g. from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston, and in the reverse direction) from three trains per hour to one train per hour, do the train staff suffer a reduction in salary?
I have very limited knowledge indeed, but would it be possible for there to be 'stop signs' for the drivers of 2-car, 3-car, 4-car, 5-car, 6-car etc etc trains to stop at - in the knowledge that enough doors would be appropriately placed?
