    Fire at Glasgow Central (08/03/26)

As usual, no thought of passengers from the Largs line. The hourly train is being terminated at Kilwinning at 32 minutes past the hour. There is an hourly service from Ayr to Paisley, which leaves Kilwinning at 27 minutes past the hour, so a 55 minute wait at Kilwinning. The return journey...

Trivia: places where there are properties you can only access via a level crossing?

There are several properties that can only be accessed by a level crossing in Corpach near Fort William. Some are accessed by a private level crossing with a sign saying Authorised Users Only.

Crewkerne station to close from 28th July (Re-opening 11th August)

A much better idea would be to redouble the entire route and run fast expresses from Waterloo to Exeter, Barnstaple , Plymouth and Penzance. It would allow slow trains from Paddington via Bristol to connect at Exeter.

    Late Night Ticket Checks

Catching a train into Glasgow Central can be really annoying if the ticket inspector stays in the back cab for the entire journey. I travel from a unstaffed station with no ticket machine, and if I can’t buy a ticket on the train, I have to queue up to buy a ticket to exit the barrier. Not good...

    Stagecoach West Scotland

Tonight is the last night of Stagecoach operations from Stranraer, Dumfries and Whithorn depots. Only a few Stagecoach buses based at Dumfries and Stranraer as outstations of Cumbernauld and Ayr. Let’s hope the changeover to the new operators goes well and passengers aren’t left stranded.

Rail & Sail ferry service to Belfast ‘set up to fail’

It would be more sensible for the coach to Cairnryan to connect with trains from Girvan or Stranraer. However, the train and ferry timetables are such that no connections are possible without a very long wait.

    BTP demanding extra coaches

It was one of the locos at Derby I thought they could use. I’m sure the Gathering could spare one.

    BTP demanding extra coaches

Surely there were plenty of spare locos at Derby that could have been hooked up to some Mk1 coaches to clear the backlog.

    Storm Floris disruption - 4/8/25

So from Glasgow to London will require Scotrail from Glasgow to Carlisle via Dumfries, Trans Pennine from Carlisle to Preston, then Avanti from Preston to London. Avanti are extracting the michael as usual.

    Caledonian Sleeper

When I used it to travel from Glasgow to Bristol for a morning meeting, I used to get the sleeper to Taunton and another train back to Bristol, in order to arrive at a sensible time.

    Extending Larkhall rail-link

Darvel to Strathaven can’t even support a bus service.

    Scotrail to replace HSTs

The Scottish Government has hopefully learned lessons from the Calmac Ferry fiasco, and is allowing sufficient time for the HST replacements to be designed, sourced, built and commissioned in time for the planned 2030 replacement. Six years seems sensible. Of course, journalists, particularly...
