TRIVIA: Direct bus services that have competitive journey times with direct train services

Yes, the convenience factor also comes into play. Using the Farnham - Guildford example, the bus stops in Farnham town centre whereas travelling by train involves a good 10 minute walk to Farnham station. Some good replies here. Interesting!

TRIVIA: Direct bus services that have competitive journey times with direct train services

I'm looking for examples of direct bus services that have competitive journey times with direct train services, so no changes when using either mode. One I can think of is Farnham - Guildford: - SWR run a 2tph service Mon - Sat with a journey time of 23 minutes. - Stagecoach bus 65 runs hourly...

Trivia: Most delayed train to ever complete its service

1990, on honeymoon and returning to Paris Bercy from Nice on the sleeper/motorail service, due in around 8am. In the middle of the night a lorry jumped off a bridge onto the tracks somwhere north of Lyon. Job stopped and we were in the middle of nowhere. It stayed stopped for many hours - water...

Trivia : Are there any stations that have no public exits?

Longcross is no longer a MoD halt. The station is adjacent to some film studios and a rapidly expanding new town.

Gave incorrect information when stopped for travelling with wrong ticket

The OP says he bought a ticket when he saw the revenue inspector.

Gave incorrect information when stopped for travelling with wrong ticket

Ok you've been doughnutting and have been caught. The railway is well used to people giving incorrect details and, from the railway's perspective, this is remedied by following the trail back from the e-ticket they scanned to your real details (they are legally entitled to do this and indeed do...

Stopped at Waterloo for fare evading, details taken

When SWR review your online purchases (very likely) will they find more Vauxhall - Waterloo tickets?

    East Croydon to Reading advice

Unofficially, the journey time to East Croydon via Redhil is competitive with the via Clapham Junction route if the North Downs is behaving itself. An example: A GWR service to Gatwick arrives on Plt. 1 at xx:14, then a 5 metre "walk" to Plt. 2 to catch the xx:18 Horsham- Bedford, giving a...

    New Overnight Gatwick Express Train

Gatwick Airport is definitely involved. I posted about this on the GWR overnight trial thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/gwr-plan-to-run-overnight-north-downs-line-gatwick-airport-to-redhill-to-reading-services.295005/page-2#post-7811076

Chester to Reading: most reliable route to take?

I'd look at the two hourly TfW service to Birmingham International. There is a pretty robust same platform change at Wolverhampton onto the Manchester - Bournemouth XC train or, if the XC service has been cancelled, continue to New Street and get the next train to Reading from there. You may...

    Wrong Railcard Selection

Travelling to Stansted on a Sunday for a business flight to Ljubljana I used my Network Card to discount the rail ticket and thought I'd picked the right option despite the reflective glare of the early morning sun on the TVM's screen. I thought no more of it. I was checked and it turned out...

    December 2026 Timetable Change

A, possibly controversial, change on the North Downs Line. On weekdays the 0500 Reading - Redhill all stations stopper has been replaced by a 0505 Reading - Gatwick Airport semi-fast service, arriving at 0626. While this plugs one of the hourly early morning gaps in the Reading - Gatwick...

Do Northern passengers pay a two TOC premium

For me the problem with the OP's original comparion is using London - Brighton fares. In my view these are a massive outlier even in the south east and I would love it if similarly cheap fares existed in my part of the world (well, some do, to some destinations, but they cannot be used for a...

GWR plan to run overnight North Downs Line (Gatwick Airport to Redhill to Reading) services.

Thank you. I also see the NDL Gatwick service as a convenient local connector. The proportion of Gatwick passengers travelling long distance to the airport on GWR when Bristol, Birmingham and Cardiff airports perform much the same function will continue to be tiny.
