    Class 701 'Aventra' passenger opinions

Personally, I miss the seats in a 455 - the 701 ones are just not comfortable, especially speaking as a slightly larger gent (read: fat). And it's a ridiculously little thing, but I also miss not being able to hold the door buttons down until they're unlocked to open them, and having to wait for...

Report of collision Bedford (Elstow) - 19/06/26

Although currently unhelpfully implying that it's Thameslink that have had the incident not EMR.

    London Buses Discussion

Random question - does anyone happen to know why TfL have stopped the 139 stopping at Beak Street southbound? Or at least, removed it from the iBus system and websites (and busmaps.org), even if the tiles are still there and the past few days drivers have still stopped and dropped off / picked...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

In a similar vein, I always find it amusing when looking at the old railway accident reports that they start off something like, "Sir, I have the honour to report..."as if it is a positive thing they are reporting; likewise the sign off: "I have the honour to be, sir, your obedient servant..."...

    Fire at Glasgow Central (08/03/26)

Out of interest, what are the normal numbers?

Trivia: Stations that still have BR era (or older) signage?

I believe they're replicas not originals.

    Fire at Glasgow Central (08/03/26)

Interestingly apt choice of name for the demolition company.

Trivia: Stations which look similar to each other or remind you of each other.

When I visited Stoke-on-Trent station a few years back, I was surprised to see how much it resembled Bournemouth.

Trivia: Stations that still have BR era (or older) signage?

Definitely a pre-1986 sign here at the former Tiverton Junction site (1986 was when this station closed when Tiverton Parkway opened a short distance up the line) https://maps.app.goo.gl/YAgUtY8SwvdKAAXx6

Why did some operators have number, then 2 destination displays ?

Stagecoach Exeter had this around 2003 or so; one window but three blinds, one with the route number, one with calling points, and one with the destination. I was beginning to think I'd imagined it as online image searches were extraordinarily unfruitful (probably because I've no idea what type...

Trivia: Unusual or Amusing Messages to Passengers

"A reminder that smoking is not permitted anywhere on this service; this especially includes the toilets at the rear of Coach C."

Trivia : Railway questions you were afraid of asking

Two that come to mind... - Were (are?) there any petrol locomotives? - How are sleepers attached to the ground?

    Train too long for platform!

Been referenced a few times in this thread; what are the 'Lime Street Controls'?

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: travel experiences and opinions

So I've finally managed to travel on one of these - my usual commute from Ewell West to Waterloo has been on them the past couple of days, so here are some thoughts from me (some - if not most - are probably repeated elsewhere!) - Seats/Comfort: I must admit, I was surprised at how...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Even in the mid-90s that was a thing - doing PE in your underwear at primary school if you forgot your kit. At least, in my school it was until a number of boys had, shall we say, a certain 'awakening' when an early bloomer girl forgot hers; then the rule was changed!
