Very interesting, only lived in Gateshead in the early 1990s. Hard to believe the high level bridge had 3 tracks. No real evidence of the station anymore. I suspect it wasn’t well used like Manors going into Newcastle (too close) - Probably would have used it going south. That said I did use the...
It is very likely I will use it to change trains for Stansted Airport. I have two choices change at Finsbury Park and Tottenham Hale or Cambridge South. It does save a lot of time as what was not a safe connection at Cambridge suddenly becomes acceptable.
This is a very add rant to be honest.
To me this situation is perfect for the area. In the past for me to get to area from Welwyn Garden City by public transport wasn’t the worse in the world. Train to Cambridge then double back on a bus. Now I can take a train a walk. It will take a while to...
In the early 1990s the timetable was generally.
Middlesbrough - Hexham. Heworth only between Sunderland and Newcastle (156)
Sunderland - Carlisle - Heworth only between Sunderland and Newcastle (156)
Sunderland - MetroCentre all stations (Pacer)
One thing I would also be interested in is why...
When the HST ran it was in addition to the standard pattern, but as LowLevel said it wasn’t half hourly spacing. There is still lots of double track. I am not sure what rationalisation has taken place since the later 1980s / early 1990s when a lot of extras used to exist.
If I recall back then...
This is the big problem with doing this. Some of the staff don’t know the rules and you have to have a debate with them. Even if you do the perfectly valid thing of changing at Highbury and Islington if no direct train is available from Kings Cross you need to go through manually. Often waiting...
They are the same seats, but the arm rests and the fact they are not rammed against the wall make them a lot more comfortable for the passenger. The 700s are a good train with poor seating. A gap between the seats would make as much difference as new cushions.
Removing first altogether from the 8 cars would be a good thing. I think the only route that has it now is Cambridge - London which could really be ran by the higher quality 387s. I know they sometimes appear on Bedford - Brighton but not frequently enough to have 1st class.
Most of the services in summer are diagrammed for 4 coaches. The fact they are very frequently short formed is another issue (which I can't understand why 158889 is leaving) - It may be possible of course that if all the trains actually worked then they could run with 4 coaches as planned (which...
I think that is the issue. I don't know if the refurbished units are also not breaking down as often. However losing a unit when we have daily short formations and a refurbishment program going on taking out a 158 and 170. That said in the Winter the 158 fleets demands will be reduced as the...
