The main reason is that should you apply for the job with good intentions, learn the job yet come to find its unsuitable, will you be effectively locked in for the long haul?

No, I went for an interview for the position at Crewe a couple of months ago. I didn't have any follow-up from the interview for several weeks despite sending a couple of follow-up emails. Eventually I was informed I hadn't made the cut :-x
