Yes, as in contactless EMV. EMV is based on the technical standard (created by Europay, Mastercard and Visa - hence the acronym) for 'chipped' payment cards and compatible payment terminals. You can - Trainsplit and Trainline are two of them.

If it works like the TOC smartcard PAYG schemes Railcard details are manually checked and added to the back-office thereafter. After the expiry date it'll be expunged automatically. If you mean your Railcard status showing up in a cEMV inspection, I've no idea.

They did promise, not that you'd know it if you checked their website today. I've submitted a FoI request to the WMM operator to ascertain why those readers haven't been installed yet.

No plans to extend TfW PAYG to Shrewsbury yet. TfW switched supplier so gates / validators at all the stations they manage are being replaced.

Asked Merseyrail customer services about their standalone readers at Chester and they say they're (still) working with TfW to enable cEMV Tap & Go functionality on them. Reading between the lines they're probably waiting until their respective cEMV schemes become interoperable at the gateline...

AIUI most of the SMA9 prep is done and the Met legacy signalling is very old (far beyond life-expired by modern standards), so from a layman's POV I still think it'll be commissioned at some point.

TfL's contract list in post #46 remains unchanged from May 2025 and as such it still refers to the (presumably) now-expired Cubic RCC. They're not waiting until the transition period ends and the IRCC proper commences before they update it, are they?

As with most stuff TfL-fare-collection-related Cubic got the Hina contract. Even after losing the big contract to Indra their existing / new equipment will still be part of the system.
