Severe Alert from the UK Government

I have seen multiple reports on local internet sites suggesting that since the alert people have been letting off fireworks, using firepits and having barbacues. it would seem that people are doing the opposite after the alert. I suppose that stands to reason as many people do like to be rebels

    Off the road at Paddington

I notice it's left hand drive which could have been a contributing factor was it Zippy George or Bungle driving ?

Are the recent derailments indicative of poor performance from Network Rail?

the sooner these high heat conditions finish and normal weather resumes the better it is pushing all of our transport infrastructure to the limits of it's endurance; not just the railways but roads, canals and rivers everything is being affected. At least this incident looks a lot less serious...

Which heritage lines do and don't have steam bans currently?

but didn't they cancel their steam gala ? 1786644956 NVR imposed a steam ban the same day network rail put their ban in place BUT Thomas is still allowed to do shuttles to Yarwell and back where the risk is minimal. The big problem is that it puts enormous pressure on the diesel drivers because...

Pros and cons of Continuous Welded Rail (CWR)

Moderator note: Spit from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/lewes-derailment-thursday-13th-august.305792/page-5#post-7901185 As for the track it is a consequence that the benefits of CWR are sometimes undone in hot weather, but much work effort is made to build provision for this into the track.

Which classes have worked a MK4 set in passenger service (aside from 89/90/91)?

There used to be a thundertbird loco stationed at Peterborough which was sometimes a 57. I have no evidence for it but they were occassionally used so someone somewhere might have a photograph

    World Cup 2026

got a couple of hours kip but the pub over the road was open so the noise of the chanting woke me up so I watched it and then got a couple more hours kip. it was an exciting game but a lot of yellows (and a red) that I thought were quite harsh. As for the mexican penalty their player was...

Report of Partial Bridge Collapse WCML 11/6

The lorry concerned belonged to a coventry based skip hire service which was incorporated in 2001 so I assume they have plenty of local knowledge of the area. I can only think that they perhaps had a new driver although, apparently he was in his 60's or just had never had a booking in that area...

Cross Country - Birmingham to Stansted

Stamfords platforms are approx 92m IIRC so a 4 car pairing should fit. Oakham for some reason has always had longer platforms. I never understood why melton didn't have longer platforms although it was probably track layout. It shouldn't be too difficult to upgrade them and add an extension. No...

Cross Country - Birmingham to Stansted

when the class 31 hauled services started in 1977 leicester to Peterborough stoppers were either 3 car met cams or 2 car cravens units I can't remember ever seeing a swindon xc unit on those but have a photograph of one at Nuneaton doing a Birmingham to leicester service

Cross Country - Birmingham to Stansted

Back in the mis 70's it was 6 car lash ups of 104 units plenty of seats but not hourly. it then went to 6 coach rakes of hauled stock a bit too long for platforms but still good capacity albeit to that point Birmingham to Norwich . It was once sprinterisation came in, followed by privatisation...

    Worst/best preservation liveries?

The thing with locos in preservation is that it is the owners choice as to what livery. The number of liveries and variants not appearing on a class 50 is smaller than the ones that have. I personally think it makes things a little more interesting and maybe attracts enthusiasts to visit lines...

    18/6/2026 by-elections - including Makerfield

A liberal a socialist and a communist walk into a bar what can I get you mr Burnham says the bartender. Jokes aside the pollsters have Burnham with a healthy 3 point lead and the fact that it is the future PM of the country standing is helping the labour vote in the constituency. The best...
