The Future of Hyperloop in the UK

I actually think it's a good idea, it'd be much safer than transporting passengers as there'd be no need for a pressurized "pod" for said passengers and I imagine it'd be cheaper and more cost effective to transport freight than passengers.

Northern Station Improvements & New Ticket Machines

Fairfield had a TVM installed yesterday, the foundations and cabling for it have been there for months but it's installation appears to be coinciding with new shelters too.

Why is there now an obsession with re-nationalisation?

Nationalisation won't solve anything, it will still be run by the same people doing the same job. In my opinion changing how the railway is privatised would be the best way forward, such as adopting the Japanese model where it's split into regions and everything is managed by the private...

What is your controversial railway opinion/idea?

Dr Beeching did nothing wrong, he provided a logical solution to a logical problem and basically did what no politician dared to do. Alot of people don't realise he was seconded onto the BRB purely to produce his infamous reports, the government of Harold Macmillan and subsequent ones are...

First rolling stock you can remember travelling on?

Either Class 303/304 or 305 on the Hadfield line, was too young to remeber which exactly.

My idea for NMT to be replaced by a Cl800

My understanding of KVB is it checks and controls the speed of the train via data transmitted from balises on the track, the system used for Pendolinos and Voyagers is called TASS (Tilt Authorisation and Speed Supervision) and works in a similar way with track side Eurobalises (complies with...

My idea for NMT to be replaced by a Cl800

ETCS = European Train Control System TVM = Transmission Voie-Machine (Used mainly in France). KVB = Contrôle de Vitesse par Balises (Also used in France). TBL = Transmissie Baken Locomotief (Used in Belgium). As najaB mentioned these are signalling systems used in aforementioned countries...

[Trivia] Unused Features in rolling stock?

Northern's 323s have the electronic destination information on the side vinyl'd over, i'm not sure if London Midland's are the same but Northern's haven't been in use since FirstGroup ran the franchise between 97 - 04.

    Re-opening of rail routes

No chance, the National Grid have only recently finished installing new cables in the 1953 tunnel to replace the life-expired cables in the Victorian tunnels I very much doubt they will be in any kind of hurry to install new cables again in the Victorian tunnels which according to them "the...

HS2 franchise to be combined with West Coast.

Royal assent should be granted in December.

    Northern franchise awarded to Arriva.

I believe it to be in preparation for when the Ordsall Chord is completed and considering they've heavily invested in the refurbishment of the station it's not surprising.

    Northern franchise awarded to Arriva.

As far as I know it's Manchester Oxford Road and Victoria, I'm pretty sure Victoria is already in NR's hands however I'm not sure about Oxford Road.

    Northern franchise awarded to Arriva.

Yep, I first noticed 150144 had all Northern branding removed then this morning the 142 I caught has had the same treatment too.

APT and Pendolino: Are They REALLY Related?

Basically there are two types of train tilting technology passive and active. Passive tilting has been around since the early 70's and has been used (with limited success) on some services however because it effectively works on the inertial forces generated from the cornering of the train it...
