Actually I have seen some of these DB Class 515 - and did travel on them quite a few times in my childhood days. So battery trains are nothing new - they do work. It is rather the price tag for the battery which was - and still is - prohibitive.

Interesting, but isn't the top speed for IEP 125 mph? I remember that 140 mph was a priced option for the IEP but did DfT take this option?

At least the Germans don't have to. All major train producing companies have production facilities all over Germany: Bombardier 4 factories + 2 for components, Siemens (at least) 3, Alstom 2 plus a number of smaller companies like Vossloh, Stadler etc. All those companies can exist well within...

Bombardier is building the ALP-45DP, a dual-mode loco, for New Jersey Transit. Found the specification sheet here. Two engines and top speed at 125 mph/201 km/h (electric mode) and 100 mph/160 km/h (diesel mode). And way too large for the UK...
