Even last night at midnight it was letting me select tickets but not authorise payment. In the end tried paying by PayPal (with the same card) and that worked fine. Might be useful information it they have further payment problems today.

I can't recommend the DB website enough. You can put up to two breaks in your journey of up to 40 hours I think. Making pleasant stop-overs in German cities of sometimes two nights possible and easing the fatigue of a long journey.
