Metrocar updates and withdrawals - Tyne & Wear Metro

Yes, the units themselves are much smoother and the heating/cooling much more effective - as they should be compared to 40 year old units. But the seating, with zero padding, and no place to put luggage is very poor indeed especially on an airport service. Fine for short distance commuting...

    Storm Floris disruption - 4/8/25

Yes, Peterborough was as far as we got. Originally we were told to get onto the following GC service from Halifax (?) 20 minutes later, and the guard said they had ticket acceptance on London Midland and we had the choice of trying to squeeze onto the GC or get the LM which started there. We...

    Storm Floris disruption - 4/8/25

Also problems in the Doncaster area, either overhead line damage and/or tree on the line. On the Grand Central due to leave at 14:08 from York but still at the platform and nothing moving in either direction for a while now.

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Just had my first trip on one of the ones, 555007 leaving Airport around 5pm to Sunderland. The metro itself was smooth riding, accelerating and braking. The seats are the most uncomfortable I have ever user, there is literally zero padding and the seat backs are very upright. I guess the new...

LNER 800+801 combination on diesel-only lines

The Durham coast line used by LNER isn't particularly quick, the GC 180's seem to trundle down until they join the ECML on their schedules, and often have a few minutes to wait at Northallerton, often for 6 or 7 minutes, in case of any delays before joining the ECML "flights"

    Passenger Assist Issue

It does say "less mobile" and surely a mum (or dad!) will be much less mobile with luggage and a pram? Do you take the baby off first and leave it on the platform while you struggle to get the luggage off , or vice versa?

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

As a mackem, I think the people of Sunderland and it's environs really don't care whether we get a 555 next, surely the priority is to simply get more into service? And hopefully they will quickly provide a more reliable service then the existing fleet... And then we can complain about the lack...

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

And yet they did "proving" runs in the weeks before Christmas.... I wonder what additional paperwork is needed to carry passengers on the NR rails, they have had a few years to sort it...

    Storm Eowyn Disruption - 24/1/25

What an arrogant and selfish attitude to have, I am sure mountain rescue and the other emergency services will be very grateful to practice a potential casualty evacuation in very difficult circumstances.... Or since you accept it was your own choice they should just leave you there...

    Amtrak Acela

We did Boston to Philadelphia on Acela in the summer, and used the skycap service to drop our luggage off so we could grab some food and drink for the journey. Very helpful and friendly staff, and we were escorted onto the platform early. On train staff were also very friendly and helpful.

Fully reserved trains with unreserved seats

Our trip on Tuesday from Sunderland also had this message, so it looks like GC loadings are quite healthy. Although a reasonable proportion of the reserved seats weren't occupied, and I didn't see anyone having to stand on the 12:30 departure.

Ticket machines: Why has QWERTY been abandoned?

The QWERTY layout was designed to minimise the chances of two keys hitting each other during fast typing, remember the keys travelled through an "arc" in the way to the paper. I can't remember the last time I actually used a mechanical typewriter...

    Class 221 for Grand Central

1st class gets you a bigger 2+1 seat. Free tea or coffee and a small snack brought to you at your seat, ordered on an spp. So you pays yer money and makes yer choice... More comfortable yes, also more expensive.

    LNER launching a mascot

More like an obscene gesture to the passengers when there is disruption...

    Class 221 for Grand Central

I generally agree with you, but for some weeks the GC feed was completely empty if you did not have a Twitter/X account. I reported this to them and after a couple of days the feed showed 5he current info where the most recent was from 2020. There have been some cancellations in the last few...
