I don't even think the next step should be heavy rail. It should be a metro connection to Durham on the Leamside, but that would require a new crossing over the Wear and a new platform in Durham, would be costly, but that's what should happen imo.

You're forgetting the 56 that runs to that part of Washington and is every 12 minutes between Sunderland and Newcastle. There's 10 buses per hour between Sunderland and Washington and 9 between Washington and Newcastle.

I wonder if it's the type of problem that might get solving when looking at the rail side of it. The Tees Valley/North East CAs are less easy to separate when it comes to the trains. Hopefully they can work together to do something sensible like making certain towns able to access both areas...

Why would you miss out the second biggest city in the north east between Newcastle and 'Boro on an express route? Durham is a tiny place, Sunderland is almost 10 times bigger in terms of population. The old Northern Connect express that was going to go via the ECML was stupid too.

The Mercedes engined ones fly up hills when they can find the right gear, faster than anything short of a coach I've driven. Cummins engined ones, when healthy, aren't bad up hills either, but not as great as the Mercedes ones. The Mercedes 5.1 litre ones do seem to know that you're going up...

Tyne & Wear Network One tickets are still great imo, full week tickets valid on the bus, metro, ferry and train throughout Tyne & Wear! Just a shame it doesn't extend into Durham and Northumberland for the people who need to use GNE and Arriva in those areas.
