    A career as a signaller

Nothing at all, lad I was with was heading for a Grade 2, got a Grade 6 at York ROC before he finished IST.

I have just done the week 6 assessment. I take it you have a fortnight home in December as well for Christmas?

    York Signalling School

very good advice, I have experience from elsewhere regarding signalling so I tend to distance myself from the other students, not because I think I know it all, I know I don't, but I don't want my past activities and knowledge impacting on them. So far I'm guilty of introducing the term...

    York Signalling School

I literally went in on the Monday, did some paperwork, then was informed I was going to Tile Hill for training. Train Tickets same day, found out hotel on the Tuesday, on the train on Wednesday.

It really does vary J-P. Some of the people on my course have been employed since July, one other who has worked for NWR for a while moved to signalling and was basically told the week for. I myself, started on Monday, informed that Wednesday I was travelling to Westwood to begin training...

Yup, agree with that, I'm here now, not fresh off the street, I have 20 years experience of signalling on heritage lines, and my biggest issue is bringing what I was taught up to date and not slipping back into the old ways. Luckily there is no one on the course who thinks they know it all and I...

    York Signalling School

Hi, it's a hard course, but as Tom Quinne said, if you pay attention and do the revision, it's fairly easy. There is a certain degree of leniency depending on your instructor. If you make a minor slip up, they'll an extra bit of test at you. I made a minor error on assessment two but as I'd...

    York Signalling School

I can, it's a fairly basic test and it's just to check your level of maths and English. As the training scheme is officially an "apprenticeship" the government has set targets for anyone doing one for maths and english. IF you don't meet Level 2 you will be offered help to get to the target, if...

    A career as a signaller

I got a start date and was told on the first day I'd be going down Wednesday for the Thursday and Friday induction.

    A career as a signaller

There are currently two of us in signalling school, started this week and at least one that finished recently. The vacancy is out again so I've been told. Keep at it. Assessmet 2 scheduled means you should get an invite to take part in an online question session, then an interview.

Well done, I'm currently in week one at Westwood. It's great fun.

So I'm going to Westwood instead of York. First day on the job and already being "sent to Coventry"

First day today sorting out bits and pieces. Off to Westwood on Wednesday for a Thursday/Friday attendance then start signalling school properly on Monday. Anyone else heading that way? Met a new starter at Barnetby today, he's on here but no idea of his username.

    Shortage of volunteers

A lot of it comes down to the attitudes of some people in positions of power/seniority. I left my last heritage railway after I was kicked off the signalling rota for failing to appear for duty. Now as it happened I dropped 2 training shifts (my typical uptake was 20 shifts per annum) owing to...
