Much of the blame is down to the double act of Beeching and Marples than Beeching alone. But Beeching himself wanted to go further and cut the trunk routes, but thankfully, his follow up plans were rejected and he went back to ICI.

I agree. Llanhilleth is my local station, and whenever I've caught a train from there the tickets are usually marked as being brought at Ebbw Vale Parkway, and by my observation, Llanhilleth is better used than the stats suggest.
A contender for the the highest standard gauge UK railway station (outside of Scotland) is Whistle Inn Halt on The Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway in South Wales, which is around 1300ft above sea level.
