I myself have a CV very similar to yours, military background, elec/mechanical and not really enjoying my work as much as I should be.
I have recently accepted a trainee driver role and am really looking forward to working in the industry.
I too am expecting a job offer from SWR soon, glad my CV is up to date!
I can only guess that maybe First/MTR do this to know more about the people they are employing, a lot of my experience and skills have nothing to do with the Rail industry though.

Hi, had my medical a couple of weeks ago, all ok and should hopefully be on the Oct course if not November.
I know I shouldn't go off the subject too much but is anyone aware of the salary once you are a fully productive driver at your depot?

Hi J, I have just passed mmi and the medical with SWR, potential start date soon I hope.
The mmi in my view was more thorough and in depth than the dmi, the Dmi I quite enjoyed but the mmi lasted around 1.50 hours.
SWR started with the computerised sjt and then straight onto filling out the 6x...
