I'd also add that when the opened up the tunnel bore of the platforms during the refurb of Haymarket has resulted in the platforms having a break feet to them (IMHO). The concourse is quite dark and dingy too, especially compared to the old one.

If they actually worked, they could have been a good medium-term solution: 4 cars, wide doors at the 1/3 and 2/3 positions to allow quicker loading and unloading, and a high-density seating layout.

All of the stations seem to have some kind of provision for platform extensions (even if it is passive). The likes of Longbenton and Walkergate have additional sets of headspans beyond the platforms that would easily accommodate an extended platform without neededing OHLE drastic modifications.
