Would there have been a later return train to Birmingham, that may have meant a change and a long wait somewhere, rather than a direct train at either 17:20/17:30?

Hi Guys Could anyone please tell me would it have been possible to have taken a same day return train from Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central in 1986. Any help on approx. time of last return trains, changes etc would be of great help. Thanks you very much in advance.
