Re 39 Steps. I've always understood that a Driver would use the large ejector to keep the train going when a communication cord was pulled if the train would otherwise come to a stand in a tunnel or ON A BRIDGE. Reality would spoil cinema I suppose.
Just a addition to #5. The satisfying sound of the gates hitting the back stop could turn into a problem. I was once too enthuiastic: the gates banged so hard that the concussion snuffed out the flames in the oil lamps on the gates. Had to go down and relight them. And it was raining.And windy...
