I've done this trip and similar in the opposite direction often enough. Edinburgh to Birmingham via Carlisle, then a short hop to bristol. No brainer. Advances probably with avanti. My 2nd choice would be via London but it feels longer.

I feel that the Airdrie route wins scenically with the central section over bleak windswept moorland. The views over the canal to the Campsie fells on the route via Falkirk are good though. Apparently there's a 17c dragoon buried with his horse in the moss there.

Charing Cross in Glasgow has no terminating trains and has 2m passengers, as does Buchanan St. Paisley Gilmour St - mentioned above - has over 3m. All figures from Wikipedia. I think Glasgow Queen St Low Level must have around 7-9m passengers and no terminating trains. Users of the High Level...
