Thats incorrect. A former employer can give a reference which states they sacked the former employee and state the reason why if it is factual. Defaming is only in play if something said about someone is damaging to their reputation AND (most importantly) false.

Just had an email inviting me to an assessment day & interview next week. After many appplications and years of trying, its one tiny little foot in the door. So I am chuffed, though obviously taking nothing for granted. A long way to go in the process.

It isnt uncommon for companies to deduct from the final salary any training costs an employee has recently had. When putting an employee through training, the company is investing in this person for the longer term benefit of the business. So it wouldnt surprise me if they did similar with you.
I applied Wednesday and did the initial tests. And then got invited to do the further tests yesterday. So dont panic yet...hopefully today or Monday you will receive the invite.

To be honest, I wouldnt be able to afford to take any role other than a driver. Whilst I appreciate there would be a drop in salary as a trainee driver, it would only be for 2 or 3 years. I wouldnt risk it by taking any other role without any guarantee of getting a driver role in due course.
