Because it is an amusing game to see how far you can travel with nobody checking your ticket.
I have done numerous trips between Euston and Manchester with not sight nor sign of anyone interested in checking I have a valid ticket, either at the stations or on the train.
And the last one I saw it was hilarious.
The RPI declared that the ticket held by the customer was invalid, as it was an off peak ticket on an early evening train heading to Peterborough.
The customer disagreed and refused to pay for a new ticket.
Meanwhile several other nearby customers...
I think it would be quite amusing to turn up on Saturday afternoon in December to buy a season ticket ticket from a roaming station host with a ticket machine, and pay for the £5k ticket in cash.
But the honest people will volunteer their tickets, and the dishonest don't!
Surely all that happens is the honest people who have made a mistake (wrong train, time, etc) get penalised, and the dishonest who kept their heads down get away with it.
The proposed changes to restrict ticket office hours to Monday to Friday early mornings only, should make it interesting come season ticket renewal time at the end of December.
It appears so, as I have been on quite a few trips where tickets are never checked (Virgin out of or back to Euston or MK is particularly prevalent).
Even if ticket checks are carried out it is pretty perfunctory, and if you don't actually offer up a ticket, they just walk past.
Pretty much everyone, from the top to the bottom.
And frankly if you are comparing the railways to a second hand car dealer, you have accepted there is a problem.
No, personal experience of many years commuting.
I can't think of any other consumer service where if you paid £5k that the response to any issues would be a shrug of the shoulders and an attempt to place the blame elsewhere.
Railway employees - For a consumer service, everyone's attitude seems be that they are doing you a favour, not delivering the service that has been paid for.
Even if you can't solve the big stuff, perhaps if even the little things were done.
The GN train I am on at 7am is filthy and has not seen a vacuum cleaner in days. How does that happen. It doesn't take a year to train a cleaner.
Yesterday's fiasco at Peterborough, communication was woeful...
