My best one was a complete holiday rather than a specific 'trip':
London Waterloo - Brussels - Cologne; sleeper Cologne-Warsaw; sleeper Warsaw-Moscow (with Belarus 'champane' brought on board by locals at Terespol :) ); Moscow - Yekaterinburg; sleeper Yekaterinburg - Novosibirsk; sleeper...
Ah well, I was only posting from memory - and I've never read the Sale of Goods Act
Back on topic, and more seriously - if I have cash then it's solely my responsibility what happens to it
If everything goes electronic, then I'll be happy to follow the trend if the banks accept 100%...
Yes but surely accepting / not accepting cash is determined by the legal definition of what constitutes legal tender? Not shareholders wishes.
If shareholders wishes came first I'm sure many companies would love to stop providing paid holday and paid sick leave 8-)
IIRC someone in the past...
When I was working for M&S in the noughties all 'shop floor' staff were paid in cash ... when my former brother-in-law was working at the NHS he was paid in cash (2010 I believe) ... so it's not the possibility of paying everyone electronically that's in question, more the option of any...
Following on from this - it's not possible to see Deepdene from Dorking West because of the curved cutting between them.
I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Wimbledon Park yet - easy to see from the Up flyover - I would always look out for it when I was a kid! 8-)
IIRC if you are standing at the extreme south of Dorking platform 2, and you know where to look, and the trees on the embankment have no leaves on them, then you can make out Deepdene station. Easier to stand at the east end of Deepdene to look down across the cutting to see Dorking.
Of course...
Well it was better than trying to drive that distance :-) and at least I was commting against the flow! (except for the Coventry-Birmigham part of the journey, that is)

Just for your information - when commuting in the UK I held a Disabled Railcard, and used it during my commute - which I otherwise couldn't have afforded (London Euston to either Worcester FS or Hall Green, via Birmingham NS). A Disabled Railcard is a real railcard, IMHO, but is not...
I can (just!) remember travelling to Ongar when I ws very young, in 1980, and wondering why the doors closed so quickly at Blake Hall, and wy Ongar only had on platform. Then much later travelling to North Weald (some time in the nineties) and being the only passenger at the station!
Aldwych...
If I recall correctly, "Ockley" station is quite close to Capel village (which is why the station used to be Ockley & Capel), but there is no easy or safe pedestrian access between them. So it's not a case of no need for off-peak service, but suppressed demand! If only a pavement was provided...
The automatic ticket machines in Brisbane's rail network have always had everything in at least English, Vietnamese and (I think) Chinese, since they were installed many years ago. This despite the vociferous locals who insist that everyone must have English as a first language (and English...
Reading through everyone's posts ... we shouldn't be so polarised, this isn't a yes/no issue. A good example of an alternative is Translink in Brisbane, Australia
(read about a third of the way down this page)

Every mainline train...
If I recall from when I lived in Dorking (and regularly used the North Downs line), this is because platform tickets are regularly issued by gate staff at either end. It's still a public right of way and if SWT/FGW don't like that they will have to move the station :D (or build a completely...
For nearly 2 years, I commuted daily from London to Worcester:
Clapham North (first train) - Euston - Birmingham NS - Worcester FS
Was only able to afford it because I had a Disabled Railcard :D which meant off-peak ticket prices. Worked out a lot cheaper than getting a local fla in...
