Well, some the examples given above can be regarded as "popular" in terms of being "populated" due to no choice from the TOC and hardly any of them that can be said to be uniformly popular for users as in "well-liked". Not a silly idea at all, the TOC-based unified franchise livery would not in itself prevent them from identifying Intercity services from more localized ones too (whatever each one of them sees as Intercity). I propose a painted flying bird on the first carriage/loco and a red stripe...

With the somewhat long-ish contracts for each franchise, would the impact of a unified region identity ("region", that sounds familiar :wink:) come more from the public's relief of a single identity for services rather than necessarily from the perceived savings of a complete livery makeover...

If a "region"-based division is carried out as per ECML/XC, then the livery is likely to be redesigned too, to a more generalized franchise image. In that case I doubt that Virgin, should they win, would have too many qualms about lessened corporate visibility, especially if a remodelling will...
