I am saying that as all 3 piers are independent structures I don't see why trains and boats had to stop running. However if the power to the pier head really was in jeopardy then that would be a valid reason.

That's interesting, because when we saw the new cable being installed it was under the walkway (with joints being made through hatches in the wood.) There were other cables festooned around though, so I guess there could have been some exposed vulnerable bits of that.

Why wasn't the ferry running? I assumed that because the trains had been withdrawn (to save the blushes of the police?) no pax could reach the boats...

Given that it's in Scotland it will be an economy measure: it halves the amount of whitewash that has to be bought - and maybe the man-hours needed to apply it!

Thanks, I must have read it as I was aware that they couldn't run 4-car sets yet. I don't know how many people were prepared to wait for the next shuttle from the pier head on the Saturday though, as when we saw a train arrive at Esplanade it was absolutely rammed - and almost empty onwards...

but presumably respectable numbers of wagons would have been sent from the origin on key services and then dispersed in 2's and 3's on other freight and trip services to depots...

and how does that help "the UK... build better resilience?" Being aware of the risks/threats/challenges to the way we have got used to living must be based on an understanding of what will hurt most if it suddenly disappears. The food distribution networkis going to be very vulnerable...

Really? V1 failed to deliver because the UK managed to report them falling North of London when they were actually on target, hence the aiming being re-set to fall short, with much-reduced effects... Read "Most Secret War" for the story. - p.s. and the Blitz wiping out housing in London...

er, that might help with your billing (eventually) but I can't see it helping to maintain your supply... Having a good-size tank in the attic will help out when the water mains supply fails (lucky us who [can] have them) and making sure that your battery can function as a UPS is a sensible...

Well of course the cheque a) takes time for you to go to a bank to pay it in, and then has to "clear" (or it used to before the DIY system got esablished) and b) there is a chance that it will get overlooked and not cashed at all, so both ways are potential gains for them, in that money stays in...

Good point. There was some discussion recently about volunteer groups (working parties) as a way for NEETS to get experience of regular attendance, group achievement and hence "job" satisfaction and it struck me that there is an enormous amount of work needing doing (one example) just to block...

I think that is worth doing, but if they can't stop the drones and glide bombs, let alone the ballistic and hypersonic missiles there won't be a Ukraine left to defend. Everything that Europe has needs to be moved to this front line, possibly even at the risk of leaving the rear undefended...
