    Umm - so to be safe, should I always retain rail tickets until I get home - then dispose of them, unless a barrier or guard took them off me at the end of a journey?

    What happens to passengers caught out by that? Would they have zero excesses automatically given or their tickets validated in some way if they were carried beyond their destination against their will by the sudden decision change? Cos it would be completely unfair if they were penalised...
