Voluntary or potentially compulsory depopulations in the UK?

It's open a little more than that, about 4 weeks a year. You can drive in, cycle, or even walk if you're feeling fit enough. But that doesn't detract from the fact it was very much depopulated with very limited public access. The same happened at Tyneham in Dorset. It now sits in the middle of...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

The shortfalls for 701s are nearly always on the Windsor/Reading side. So actually getting a 10 car on the mainline suburban side is pretty much a dead cert.

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

When things stopped being a pound (for the inevitable reason that is inflation), they lost their USP, and shoppers, rightly or wrongly, felt they were being hoodwinked. The company should have seen this coming. Why did they not adopt the Irish "Dealz" brand?

As we expected: Remaining eight 221s for XC

I note a couple of ex EMR class 180s were moved to Eastleigh recently. Could this be part of a plan to release the two Cl 221s from GC?

Commuter and Metro Services: Which Rolling Stock Upgrade Had the Greatest Impact? In the last 40 years

Absolutely dangerous. Not from the ability (or otherwise) of people to use the slam doors, but their utterly woeful crash worthiness.

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I've been in a TG Jones today. I was surprised to find that the manky old carpet had gone, and the lighting upgraded. The Ryman's next door on the other hand was shabby and overpriced.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Can I just add that I'm finding this discussion very educational. I'd guessed that Planning and rostering involved some quite complex formulae, but the amount of variables at play here are quite mindblowing. It's a testament to the skills of all those involved that the railway even remotely...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

We could compare with the Cl 700s. 8 or 12 car fixed formation.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

For comparison, do you know what the availability rate is of the 450s?

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

It's a big debate within healthcare at the moment. The demographics of many of the patients will preclude email, but a fair amount may be able to handle texts. The trouble is that an appointment letter can sit on a coffee table as a reminder, a text message can be read and forgotten about. You'd...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

We have given up sending out appointment letters in our department (NHS). Patients were missing appointments left right and centre. They all get a phone call now, which is a lot more time consuming than churning letters out, and we are discovering a lot of people don't answer calls from numbers...

    Longest line of sight (UK)

Driving home from.work on Saturday along the A303 eastbound near to the Deptford Interchange (A36) I spotted some transmitter lights peeping over a hillside. I think it must have been Hannington. In the year or so I've been doing that drive I've never noticed them before.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

I spend a fair amount of time in France. I don't bring much with me from the UK, but I do keep a reasonable stock of British bought Ibuprofen and Vicks Sinex. That and Lidl baked beans.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

I had cause to pay in a cheque recently, took 5 days to show on my account. Am I to assume that it still requires human intervention to take this long?

    Funeral arrangements discussion

I'm noticing these days, that more people are opting for close family cremations, with a memorial thanksgiving service coming a while later, when things are a little less raw. It also means more people are able to attend, as it gives increased notice to get time off work etc.
