The sad thing is that people might actually be put off using public transport by looking at the map and assuming no bus links exist. In fact the 801 (and X52) are excellent links but aren't in the deal as explained above, and even some Stagecoach services like Moreton-Stratford and Kemble to...
This looks like a pass that is overdue a more fundamental rethink to make it a bit more useful. These days it's not really worth it for explorng the area as the bus validity has been restricted to selected Stagecoach services only, mostly at the western end. That leaves the North Cotswold line...
The information in the various consultation documents suggests they have thought a lot about this. In the 2024 consultation it says:
The 2026 consultation updates with:
So it's been a no-brainer for some time that the crossing has to close. The real argument is what should replace it and, more...
I don't quite follow this argument - Bicester is not an easy place to drive, so it's a good idea to close one of the major access roads? The EWR consultation report suggests that the extended closing time of the level crossing would cause traffic to back up both to the Market Square and the ring...
On the other hand, everything that does get done usually starts as a policy. If you don't have the policy, the money and the action don't happen. You've got to start somewhere.
A new station at Watage & Grove is envisaged for phase 2 (2131-2037) of the County Council's proposed strategic plan - which is being discussed here https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/oxrail-2040-plan-from-oxfordshire-county-council.291791/
Regardless of the reason for the delay, it's frustrating to people who would benefit, holds up the payback on this huge investment and doesn't paint rail in a good light. It gives easy ammunition to those who criticise other investments, and HS2 shows we are not short of critics. My big worry is...
The number of road fatalities in the UK is in the thousands per year, but we don't fence off all roads. But trams (and busways) seem to be held to different standards which makes them more costly. In the end, though, the sheer cost and disruption would be enough to make an Oxford tram system...
The streetscapes in the centre look fairly similar to Oxford to me. In some narrow streets there is single track bidirectional running.
Part of the difference may be what you mean by 'segregation' - in the UK we seem to insist on massive and expensive segregation measures, as the Cambridge...
Really? What about somewhere like Amsterdam, which seems to manage just fine with even more cyclists than Oxford as well as its fair share of old buildings and other geographical constraints.
Having said that, I'm not convinced the immense cost and disruption of a tram network is justified in...
It is indeed a wish list document; however my point was that the wishes it lists are at least reasonably well considered and not completely infeasible over the 15 years it covers. Unlike some of the suggestions here which seem wildly pie in the sky.
And the Rail Promoters group has been set up...
Without wishing to rain on everyone's parade, did I miss something somewhere? Abingdon is not mentioned in the consultation document and the sort of things being discussed here strike me as far less likely and practicable than things that are actually being proposed. So it would look like...
Sadly, it looks like this discussion is going to degenerate into a rehash of the DOO debate. But, to answer this question:
Unless plans have radically changed, the 2-car trains on EWR will not be carrying 600 passengers
Even if they were, there have been busy 12-car trains running perfectly...
As an aside, not only does Oxford's age make it bad for driving and parking, but it has a very pro-public transport council which is actively trying to achieve shifts away from driving. Including being about to introduce a congestion charge as a temporary measure until they can implement their...
The document itself doesn't specify a frequency for Oxford-Bristol, but does put Grove & Wantage down as 1tph. So presumably that would mean it would have to be either to Oxford or Didcot but not both, unless they alternate on a 2-hourly frequency which seems a bit unlikely.
