Were railways better before passengers were referred to as "customers"?

I don't care who bought the ticket where, when or for how much, not important, doesn't matter However, once a person is on a platform waiting for a train to enable them to a safe passage from one location to another by rail then they are and always will be passengers.

Best livery on a Class 47

A heavily weather beaten two tone green on a Class 47 still remains the best livery I've seen on any loco

Freight on the Bishop Auckland - Saltburn

There is a regular container working to Teesport (from Glasgow?) in mid-afternoon which I've seen a few times quite often hauled by 66109 'Teesport Express' A couple of weeks ago while waiting at Urlay Nook crossing I was expecting to be see a soon to go Pacer on a Bishop Auckland-Saltburn...

Looking down on people paying to travel 1st class: Why?

I don't get to travel much these days by rail these days, but the other day I needed to get a ticket from Edinburgh to Darlo. Being a bit skint I went for the cheapest option and as a first class ticket was two quid cheaper than standard I went for that. When I travel I'll do my best not to...

DTVA (Teeside) Airport proposes relocation of railway station

I wouldn't be surprised if Teesside Airport station puts in a stellar performance this year and has the highest percentage increase in passenger traffic than any other station on the network. Despite there only being one train a week on a Sunday morning in each direction (that is not shown on...

    Frankfurt - no ticket barriers!

I'm pretty good at spotting ticket inspectors in Berlin, plain clothes and always working in pairs. They stand on the platform at each end of a carriage and just as the doors are about to close they step onto the train and once the doors are closed announce who they are. If they catch someone...

Two Full weekdays in Berlin, what to do?

In a couple of days you are not going to see it all. Given the limited time I would suggest on the first day do a walking tour (some of these are free and rely on you tipping the guide) or even better do a bike tour. Walking all day can be hard work on the feet... but as Berlin is flat as a...

    Berlin Gesundbrunner

Until recently I used to live one stop from Gesundbrunnen, but I've not been up there recently so I'm not sure how the new building work is coming along. Where the new building is being built used to be pretty much an open space with only a small booking office and a couple of small retail units...

    Berlin

If your train does stop at Ostbahnhof as well, I'd definitely take it as far as Ostbahnhof... if only for the fact the S-Bahn between Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof is shut for a couple of weeks for maintenance. (Actually it's the section between Friedrichstrasse and Ostbahnhof. There are three...

    Derailment at Berlin Hbf

At least one of the S-Bahn lines that head east/west through Ostkreuz still has an automatic on-board announcement saying change at Ostkreuz for Brandenberg Airport. God knows when this place is going to open. At the moment nobody dare give a date in case this is missed as well.

    Berlin info

I had a wander out to Lichtenberg on a grim cold Tuesday afternoon yesterday and the DDR ICE VT 18.16 train mentioned earlier is still sat there (and judging be some of the pics on google maps, it's been there a while) http://www.flickr.com/photos/37466968@N08/8513843764 There is another...
