UK rail minister got engineer sacked for raising safety concerns

Ethics aside, this is staggeringly stupid management by Hendy. He has basically doomed Dennis out of ever being in an engineering job, meaning that he will now have no choice but to make a living out of becoming a very popular (and very loud!) critic of Hendy and co. while simultaneously giving...

UK rail minister got engineer sacked for raising safety concerns

This is just speculation but I imagine this wasn't the first time Gareth Dennis had come under fire from his employer for his public comments and this was the final nail in the coffin. It's not particularly fair but he can't have his cake and eat it - if Gareth Dennis wants to build his career...

ECML blocked Stevenage - Hitchin (09/08 and 10/08))

Update: 29 minutes late into kings cross , can't believe it

ECML blocked Stevenage - Hitchin (09/08 and 10/08))

Ah that's good. If passengers are well behaved at stations and the driver floors it we might avoid being late into delay repay territory but I think (hope) it is unlikely.

ECML blocked Stevenage - Hitchin (09/08 and 10/08))

On 1E08, miraculously managed to store all my luggage and get my seat at Durham. It's full and standing, long holds at every station trying to get passengers to deboard (although I must say the train doesn't feel *that* busy). And we haven't even reached the affected area yet...

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

Exhausted from a camping trip in horrible weather in the lake district yesterday, I headed home on a trip which involved getting 1S66 (the last nortbound train that ran without disruption) up through Penrith. We were strongly considering spending another hour in the pub! I have only just...

Which specific train journey is the most profitable in the UK?

The issue with this is that 'fully loaded' and 'Heathrow Express' don't fit in the same sentence. Now the Standsted express on the other hand...

Looking for Advice - Newcastle to Salisbury 1st March

I'm travelling from Durham to Bristol on the 1st of March and the rail situation is so dire that for the first time in my life I am taking a British domestic flight (Newcastle to Bristol). Was £18 when I booked it but seems like prices have increased quite a bit since then.

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

I got HT up the MML in early January and I was convinced it ran electric until Kettering - I'm pretty sure RTT said it was and it certainly sounded like the diesel engine didn't start until the wires ended, when everything became an awful lot noisier.

Used 16-17 instead of 16-25 railcard

The issue is, from my (very anecdotal) observation of my friends in their late teens/early 20s, many people deliberately make the same mistake.

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

I thought the blunt nose was primarily to reduce the length a little so 10 car units could fit on platforms. Seems like other people have had basically the same discussion upthread and don't know whether the chicken or the egg came first but in any case it all works out quite nicely

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Would this not also be something to do with aerodynamics since if I understand correctly the 810s are flatter than the 80xs?

What is going on with the Stranraer Line?

Meant to be taking a trip to Dumfries and Galloway in mid-march. Looking very touch and go whether it will be possible by train or not right now.

What ECML timetable improvements would you like to see?

Why were the proposals ruled out? Has the case not changed since then with TPE struggling for stock and the new Northumberland line providing pathing opportunities? Someone in the other thread said 6 paths per hour up that section of the ECML. 2x LNER, 1 TPE, 1 XC and still leaves space for XC...
