The W thing for northbound Marches services started around 20 years ago due to frequent wrong-routings at Maindee West Jn. Birmingham-bound trains stayed as 1Mxx.
Another inter-regional route that’s lost traditional descriptors is Cardiff - Portsmouth. Was always O & V in loco-hauled days but...
My mistake. Should have said “Skirl of the Bagpipes”!

What was the range of a twin tank 37? As built, a 33 could do around 800 miles, but most had smaller fuel tanks fitted during the 80s due to the original design being prone to cracking.
It may well have been a record for longest single run (not sure if the OP was asking for longest mileage on a tour with a single loco, or longest single run).
My record for longest single run in the UK is 33109 + 33116 Inverness - Euston on the return leg of the Skirl o’ the Pipes, but that was...
Blood & Custard also says the whole unit got painted in a variation of the APT livery in October 1978. Regardless of that, the four vehicles of 4002 were the only ones to exist beyond 1987.
According to Blood & Custard, it was last used in March 1981. Following 2 years in storage at Wimbledon, it moved to Clapham Jn on 22/02/83, staying there until 05/06/90 when in moved to Strawberry Hill for stripping.
Six Bells has 20067 & 20102 also working that tour, so not a single loco on the tour.
A higher mileage tour I did was D1015 on the Western Cheiftain. It also featured 66206 & 67005 but 1015 did 1,104.16 miles, by my reckoning.
That’s former 4 PEP unit 4002, which was stored at Clapham Jn from 1983 until 1990. It was officially departmental unit 057 but never carried the number.
A train I used regularly in early 1988 was the 17.18 Pembroke Dock - Bristol TM, which ran via Bristol Parkway. On the occasions I did it it was a Landore 108 power twin (7 times) or 3-car set (twice). That was just over 158 miles if you did it throughout.
Seem to recall there was an 07xx...
You’ve only got to go on Railgen Archive to find dozens of workings for each 47/3. Re. the WR xos locos, they all had boilers until the mid-70s, so had been common before then.
512. All the early withdrawals were boiler-fitted and would’ve been common on passenger trains. My father had D1908 three times for 240.5 miles and he wasn’t exactly going for 47s in the late 60s. Phots of that and D1562 & D1734 working passenger trains are easy to find, D1671 is more elusive...
When it got to Padd, the sleeper was usually shunted into one of the higher numbered platforms so anyone in it could sleep until 07.30. Had 08948 do that the first time I did 1A09, but nothing on my subsequent three trips, though at least one was due to it running a couple of hours late after...
