9th August 1976 - 50 years of production HSTs in passenger service.

My first ride in a HST was 43010 / 43012 Swindon - Chippenham 17 August 1976, hard to believe that was 50 years ago!

Why are the engines on diesel locomotives kept running at a planned parking stop?

That sounds very hard to believe, that trains would run completely empty at that time of day! Also hard to believe that commuters would not board a diesel train but would be prepared to wait on the platform for longer to board an electric train instead.

2 mainline steam tours fail yesterday how unlucky.

45212 was still at Weymouth this morning.

    Derailment at Ramsgate (29/11/24)

They are oxygen cylinders, in a later photograph there are also some propane cylinders with them, used for gas cutting.

Heart of Wessex Line: Can anyone confirm or expand on my memory of proposed service improvements and is there still hope they might happen?

The linespeed on that section is 45mph, From Yeovil to Yetminster. It would be an improvement if this could be increased.

LNER 5 minute reservation… how does it know?!

Having not travelled on LNER for a long time I didn’t realise that they operated this ridiculous system of allowing passengers to reserve seats after the train has started its journey. I thought it was only Cross Country that operated this system.

Why have metal nameplates become less common on multiple units?

In the case of the Voyagers it’s all down to the cost of repairing the body after the removal of the nameplates. If a higher quality job was done after the removal of the nameplates and the area repainted, there would have been no evidence there had previously been a nameplate there. This also...

    Use of horns

It used to be, also for long tunnels it used to be that driver had to sound the horn at regular intervals while passing through the tunnel. This was removed from the rulebook about 20 years ago.

LNER were seriously proposing airline style check-in for rail travel?!

I don’t think that would be the case, as the tilting action of the APT eliminated the lateral g-force when on bends, so standing on an APT would have been similar to standing on a non tilting train.

Rail staff caught up in strikes

Why should the railway companies care about net zero, it is the government who are obsessed with net zero, not the railway companies.

Un-user friendly railway: Wrongly branded trains

There are eight 166s still in FGW blue, although quite soon that number will reduce, as when the refurbishment of the 165s has been completed the 166s will be next in line for refurbishment.

I believe 57803 and 58703 were taken from Stoke to Simms, Newport Docks for scrapping.

GwR HSTs to be stood down

Although non standard as far as the 158 fleet is concerned, the Perkins engines fitted to the TFW 158s are the same engines that are fitted to the Turbos. Incidentally FGW, as it was back in the day did have some Perkins engined 158s in the fleet until December 2007, when most of the former...
