What's any of that (apart from the reservation one) got to do with whether someone gets to sit in a window seat or not?

Surefire way of making sure no one sits next to you.

The amount of luggage space is irrelevant, because nobody EVER uses it, or at least they don't on FCC's trains.
Every evening I travel out of Kings Cross, usually on a 365. Every evening there will be people who get on with a suitcase, and nobody EVER uses the luggage rack at the end of the carriage. They either leave the suitcase in the vestibule or if they get on before the last minute rush, put it one a seat (until someone like me makes them move it so I can sit down).
The only use the luggage racks have is when someone uses one to sit on.

I asked, then another passenger asked... There were a lot of people standing. 15 minutes and one station later, she was still saying the same.
So when the "gripper" came through. I loudly said to him - "I think that bag's been abandoned - the lassie sitting there says it belongs to another passenger, but they've never returned for it"

THere was one today on the Glossop/Hadfield line. Left Hadfield, and someone dumped a suitcase on a set of chairs. A ticket inspection took place between Hadfield and Glossop, and the conductor noted the suitcase. Another inspection happened after departure from Dinting, the suitcase was still there, so the conductor went shoutign through for the owner of the suitcase, and when no one claimed it, he dumped it at Newton.
What you mean of course is that it's a pain for the person in the aisle seat to have to mvoe their stuff when the occupant of the window seat wants to get out.
As you were on a logn journey, it was obviously easier for you to sit at the window undistrubed.
I don't see how you can dress it up as doing them a favour though.

I take my usual stroll through the train from Coach A to K (I have my reasons!), and have found no less than seven large suitcases on the floor. Two suitcases have been left unattended in the vestibule, near the toilet. But there is plenty of space in the luggage racks!

Well, this is where I come in and I am gonna be honest with you guys
Me and my brother travelled back, first class, on the 30th last month and it wasn't full by any stretch of the imagination and I had a huge rucksack with some expensive equipment inside which I had tried to get onto the overhead racks but couldn't (even my brother tried) and a laptop case. My brother also had a laptop case but with our laptops being out, we put the cases in the racks.
Everything was fine until we got to Northampton when our train split with the New Street train and the guard came over and said that the train was full and that he was declassifying first class, not happy!
So through come some people and some people asked me nicely and I explained the situation, even showed them and they understood and moved on. Then come these two women and I told them they I couldn't move the bag because of the equipment inside and they I couldn't get it up onto the rack, they asked if I had paid for two seats and I said that I hadn't and before I got another word in, they took matters into their own hands and forced my bag into the rack. I asked them not to be rough because of the equipment and they didn't care, they just wanted a seat and then proceeded to be rude and aggressive, of which there was no need.
I got my bag back down and put it on the table to get something out so I could do something on the laptop and then saw that my equipment had been damaged and showed them what they had done but they didn't seem to care and laughed about it all the way off the train at Nuneaton
Anyway, long story short, if I was able to give up my seat, I would have willingly given it up but because of the delicate nature of my cargo which I was carrying, I wasnt able to put it anywhere. Luckily, the warranty on the items hadn't expired and I was able to get them replaced

Sorry, I think you were bang out of order. You should have moved the bags when the first people asked you to. The argument about expensive items doesn't really wash. It is a risk to take valuables anywhere, that's why there is insurance.

I don't care what's in someone's bag, it ought to be in a rack, or at least somewhere other than a seat!

Well I'm sorry but I don't think I was, I think I was being very reasonable. I couldn't put them in the overhead rack to start with and I wasn't going to let that bag out of my sight, so what else could I have done? There are no luggage racks in first class and I wasn;t going to let it out of my sight and move it into standard, who knows what could have happened.
Was your bag bigger than 1m x 1m x 1m?

I'm not that sad to know how big my bag was, all I know it is wouldnt fit either way it would go into those luggage racks and had to be forced inside, causing the breakage of my equipment by these women.

I will tell you know for a fact that a London Midland Class 350 Desiro overhead rack is no way that size
If your bag is so big that it can't be stowed out of the way, either in the racks provided or udner the seat, then it might well be too big to be taken with you.
Just because you insist on lugging around a rucksack that is as big as a small house does not give you the right to deprive others of the opportunity to sit down.

I'm currently spread out on a table of four in First Class on a Pendolino, with laptop, iPod, iPhone, drinks and crisps (and my bag!). Why, if it gets busy, should I have the right to tell other people to shove it because I insist of bringing half my life with me?
Answer - I don't! And nobody would ever lay hands on my stuff, because I'd move it if I was asked.

Okay then Sherlock, let's go back and let's tell you exactly what I had in my rucksack that day.
We have one tripod, half in the back, half out, I took that out and put that in the rack, no problem there. I had four bottles of Asda Strawberry and Vanilla flavoured water, one sandwich box complete with sandwiches and crisps inside, two cameras complete with camera cases, six batteries, several memory cards, one camcorder, complete with batteries, memory cards and camera case, one freightmaster book, one A5 ruled notepad complete with prep for London Victoria and Brockley, one packet of Nurofen for my brother, one packet of Diareze, three pens and god damn it, it was a nightmare to haul around all bloody day and did I mention that the temperature was 28 degrees and was bloody hot!
The tripod, not so bothered about, everything else, not so bothered about but those cameras, that camcorder, all of the equipment that went with it, that's a £1000's worth of equipment so yeah, forgive me for being a little bit hacked off that these two ladies broke this equipment and forgive me for being a little bit hacked off that two people decide it is my fault for not giving my seat up when I had shown them that I couldn't get the sodding thing into the overhead racks, even after I had taken the tripod out.
Why didn't you put in on the table in front of you?
Then whose fault is it? Surely you decided to take the things that you did out with you? Therefore it's surely your fault that you had a large bag to carry them all in?
I'd be hacked off if I was standing, couldn't sit down because some chap was taking up two seats because he had a bag the size of Japan.

The other bag that we usually take has been ****ed on by the cat and was still ponging with cat pee
So my brother should have given his seat up as well, you are therefore saying that the poeple in first class would have had to give all of their seats up and move out so that everyone else who had to stand could sit down?
So why didn't the other people complain when i showed them huh?
