Should table seats be abolished in quiet coaches?

Surely all compartments is a better answer for quiet coaches? :D

Since when was talking forbidden or even discouraged in the quiet coach? Every Toc I use on a regular basis only state that the use of mobile telephones is not allowed.

I once came across two ladies of a certain age in an East Coast quiet coach, who would maintain the silence as they felt appropriate. They would stare at 'noisemakers' in an intimidating fashion with their glasses perched on the edge of their noses.

Bloody ****ing hell !

No, there is no rule!:lol: You were the one that said 'life should be funnier'.;)

However, it is 'the done thing' in the London area. Well, there are often exceptions.

I guess I must be the only one who believes that in these hectic modern times there is no real need for
First Class
Quiet coaches
Full service dining facilities
It seems there are a few people who believe that a group of people traveling together who find themselves seated in a "Quiet" carriage should sit in stony silence throughout the journey.

IIRC LM 323s state that personal music is also Verboten in the quiet zone. A rule that is widely flouted of course.

The problem is that a table is for more than talking. For those who are tall it's extra leg room (I'm 1.86m, not sure what it is in old money) and for everyone it means that you can put thinks on the table. Woe betide someone may want a flat surface to read a book or a paper off :o

That being said people's attitudes need to be a bit more relaxed. I have no problem with someone's phone going off as long as they answer (or reject it <D) quickly and take the call outside or if the phone call is below background noise.

Well of course, I'd do it too as it's frankly ridiculous. What difference does it make if I am listening to music or not? Nobody else can hear it. How can it be enforced anyway? I often have my earphones in but no music is playing.

If they are trying to prevent people having music up too loud then I fully support them, but that is prohibited throughout the entire train.

I am 1.88m tall (6'2"), and quite enjoy the opportunity to have legroom and a bit of peace at the same time. So, to the the OP, my answer is "No!"

On the 13:45 East Coast HST from Leeds to KX at the moment. Yet again some business type blokes are at a table seat further down the coach having a loud chat.

At weekends its worse as groups tend to head to table seats like they are a magnet to them and make as much noise as they want without actually using mobiles, which a lot of the time would actually be quieter.

So are there people like me and my wife who think quiet coaches should be airline seats only due to groups making noise, or is that penalising the few groups that don't make loads of noise?

The problem with the 'quiet zone' is that I don't think talking loudly is considered a problem by alot of the conductors that I have come by. I think that their idea of 'quiet' is no talking on phones and no music. Sadly you tend to get the odd idiot that decides to just talk on the phone anyway and the chav with the music on loudspeaker. To an extent, I don't really think that getting rid of tables would make the 'quiet zone' any 'quieter'.

But, seriously, if i take the Tube with 2 friends, will we have to shut up and find the trip boring ?

No, not at all. If anything it's talking to strangers that doesn't happen, whenever I've been on tube people have spoken to each other in small groups

So is the "No Talking" rule only about talking to strangers ?

Most tube trains are quieter than any quiet coach on the rail network. Nobody speaks and nobody makes eye contact for more than 1 second

Apart from the horrible train noises (e.g. Central Line  ).
I never found a Tube train very quiet, especially about talking, so are you trying to say NR Quiet Coaches are hopeless ?

Pretty much although of course it is de facto rather than de jure.

Tube trains are horribly loud. Most, if not all NR stock is quieter and usually there is some form of insulation for passengers

Well, that's why no one talks, isn't it. Personally I rather like the sound of 1992 Stock powering away into a tunnel. Although obviously, nothing can come close to a 323.

Though 1992 TS is the loudest Tube Stock in use (not for motor sounds, just for running sounds). :/

Yes, I was also under the assumption that the requirement of the Quiet Coach was to switch all electronic equipment such as phones, laptops and music players to silent mode, or off, but that there was no rule limiting conversation between passengers (Within reason, though you would hope that such consideration of others would be exercised wherever people are sitting, even though this is sadly sometimes not the case) and making all those occupying the quiet coach sit in stony silence.

As well as making quiet coaches all airline seating, they should remove all the electric sockets from by the seats.

What about all those people who browse the internet on their phone quietly? Or those who turn off the phone but still needs charging?

Or those who want to use their laptops? Seems a strange idea to remove plugs from the quiet carriage.

What about people with e-book readers?

They should be encouraged!
